Designing Dynamic Supply Chains for volatile market conditions

It is impossible to extract ever higher performance from enterprise supply chains under existing design regimes, which are flawed because they largely assume a static world. The same can also be said about the way we currently design our internal organisation structures. The ‘new normal’ operating conditions, which can often be quite volatile, demands a re-think. Indeed, what is now badly needed is a fundamentally new way forward for the design and operation of enterprise supply chains. The starting point is to recognise that markets/customers for all product/service categories inevitably contain a range of different ‘buying behaviours’; our research indicates a spread of 3-4 dominant buying behaviours [to achieve up to 80% alignment with the market]. We are then able to use this new understanding of the market structure to the way we configure the internal organisation structure. By adopting a ‘multiple supply chain alignment’ design, linked directly to customers [and suppliers], it is possible to achieve increased top line revenues; lower costs-to-serve; and correspondingly improved margins. In the process it will mean enterprises become more adept at facing and managing the risks thrown up by disruptive factors in the operating environment, be they man-made or from natural disasters. This address will demonstrate how new supply chain designs can be developed and managed to achieve a quantum shift in the operational and financial performance of the firm, and numerous actual examples of successful application of ‘alignment’ principles in the field will be used in support of this new concept.

Dr John Gattorna, Global Supply Chain Thought Leader & Author, and Executive Chairman

Dr John Gattorna is at the forefront of supply chain ‘thought leadership’ in the world today. He has made it his passion in life to stay at the cutting edge, and the result is there for all to see and share in his last three books, the most recent being Dynamic Supply Chains; Delivering Value Through People, FT Prentice Hall, Harlow, 2010.  The latter book, and the research that underpins it, for the first time offers a way of dealing with the ‘new normal’ operating environment, which is characterized by volatility, and yet more volatility. John’s work has taken on a ‘whole-of-business’ feel and scope because he steadfastly believes that you can only transform enterprise supply chains if you transform the enterprise itself, hence his multi-disciplinary approach to supply chain design.  Apart from researching consulting and teaching, John likes to share his best thinking with peers and business associates around the world, and this is why he organises these pivotal summit events every two years or so – bringing the very best supply chain academics and practitioners together for a talkfest lasting three days. The topics to be debated and discussed will excite you, and so will the delegate list that reads like the ‘Who’s Who’ of supply chain royalty. In December 2011, in Shanghai, John was named Supply Chain Asia ‘Visionary of the Year’.

"It was professionally organized with high profile speakers who delivered insights of challenges and solutions of the supply chain in Vietnam! It was definitely interesting event where all participants could learn, share and network with senior expertise and leaders in supply chain. I also enjoyed creative activities and fun during the event too!"
Duc Nguyen, General Manager, Prism

"I was delighted to attend the 2012 VSC Supply Chain conference as a speaker.  I found the conference to be as professional and well organised as any I've attended in Europe.  Great content, interactive and a superb venue set a great foundation for information to be shared and networks to be developed.  I'm eagerly anticipating 2013."
Jamie Meacham, Congress 2012 Speaker

"I have been been presenting at major business events for some 15 plus years in Vietnam and must say the organization, quality of venue and most importantly the relevance and  content of materials and seniority and  experience of the participants was exceptional at the supply chain event. I would truly recommend."
Ralf Matthaes, Regional Managing Director, TNS

"As a sponsor and participant I commend the VSC for the success of this event. It was well organised, well presented, and most importantly, delivered a successful outcome. I think that you, in particular, did a great job in maintaining the energy and momentum of the occasion, and I think there are lots of reasons why Dematic will want to participate in next year’s VSCC event."
Martyn Isbell, Vice President, Asia Pacific Logistic Systems, Dematic S.E.A. Pte Ltd
