Thousands of consumers pay regular visits to prominent retail stores like Wal-Mart, JC Penney or Best Buy, and pick up a bagful of stuff from the huge range of products that are showcased there for sale.

Chalking Out the Career Paths in Supply Chain


There are a number of options based on which you can design your long-term career path within Supply Chain.


Supply Chain professionals utilise various resources to plan out their career movement by setting and changing benchmarks. You can either set goals in your current SCM domain or can start acquiring knowledge in new disciplines. The key to success would be to leverage on mentors, peers, extensive networking, and professional associations.


APICS - The Association of Operations Management conducted a survey in January 2010 to get an overview of supply chain professionals’ career paths. Over 6,000 professionals and customers participated in this survey.

The following are the major five skills, characteristics, and achievements the respondents indicated that are responsible for their career growth:

• Dedication to the organisation as well as to the customers.


Just like any other domain, achieving success in SCM does also happen over a period of time. If you closely observe the pioneers of SCM, you will find out how these professionals have invested their time, effort and expanded their knowledge with the changing times, and earned prestigious positions in top-notch organisations.


In an article published in the Wall Street Journal in June 2013, the author Melissa Korn wrote, "With global operations becoming more complex, companies in manufacturing, retail and technology - and the consulting firms that service them - are scrambling to hire people with supply chain expertise. But these experts are hard to come by."


The statement reflects the shortages of skilled professionals and a high demand of expertise in the domain of supply chain that can lead to a rewarding and sustainable career.
