INCREASED INVESTMENT IN VIETNAM COLD CHAIN MARKET

Two Japanese logistics company launched New Land Vietnam Japan Joint Stock Company, a four-temperature (room temperature, fixed temperature, refrigerated and frozen) cold chain logistics JV in Vietnam in 2016. The companies have constructed logistics center and trucks to consistently manage temperature among all food product operations including storage to shipment. CLK Cold Storage, JV established by Cool Japan Fund, Japan Logistic Systems and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. has been operating in Vietnam for over 20 years and K Line Group is experienced in marine and air transport services. Another Japanese investor, Yamato Holdings is seeking partners to start a chilled delivery service in Vietnam as the demand grows for sushi and other Japanese cuisine in the country. The increase in the investment in the cold chain market in Vietnam has made a positive impact on the market.

Increase in Cold Storage Capacity: The cold chain companies have been increasing their cold storage capacity over the years and various companies are planning to increase it in future due to the growing demand for cold chain services in the market. The demand for cold storage and transport systems have increased over the years with rising pharmaceutical industry and frozen and processed food industry. The construction of a Cold Storage Warehouse in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam by CLK Cold Storage Company Limited in 2016 can be stated as an example. It is a JV established by Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” Line), Cool Japan Fund Inc. (Cool Japan) and Japan Logistic Systems Corp. (Japan Logistic Systems). In addition to this, Konoike Vina Company has increased a warehouse in Dalat in 2015 to increase its capacity.

Lack of Infrastructure: Cold chain industry in Vietnam is at a nascent stage because the company lacks proper infrastructure. The country has poor road connectivity and obsolete vehicle fleet which increases the logistics cost. Moreover, there is lack of storage space in the country which poses a great challenge to the cold chain industry. There are delays in unloading, lack of refrigeration and improper coordination along the supply chain in Vietnam which pose an issue to the cold chain industry in the country. The country has broken cold chain during transportation, storage and last kilometer. This issue has led to less revenue generation from the cold chain industry. Lack of infrastructure also led to loss of 25.0% – 30.0% of fruits and vegetables in 2016. In addition to this, a percentage of seafood and meat items are also destroyed on their way due to lack of refrigerated transport and storage
