New expressway opened to traffic
The expressway’s 20-kilometer section starts at Belt Road No. 2 and ends at National Highway 51 with a designed speed limit of 120 kilometers per hour. It has a width of 27.5 meters for four lanes and two emergency lanes.
With this expressway section, the duration of driving between HCMC and Vung Tau can be shortened from 2.5 hours to one hour and 20 minutes at best.
According to Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC), as Belt Road No. 2 has only had its first phase completed and the road leading to the expressway has just been completed, only under-ten-ton vehicles can use the expressway. Heavy trucks will be allowed once the four-kilometer section from An Phu intersection (District 2) to the belt road intersection is finished.
Vehicles have to pay a toll fee of VND2,000 per kilometer while running on the expressway. With 20 kilometers, the fee imposed on under-12-seat vehicles, two-ton trucks and buses is VND40,000; trucks of 2-4 tons pay VND60,000 and over-31-seat vehicles and trucks of 4-10 tons pay VND80,000.
Before the section was opened to traffic, crash barriers along both sides of the expressway were found not meeting design standards and contractors had to reconstruct them. The original opening day was December 30, 2013 but it was rescheduled to January 2, 2014 as a result.
HCMC-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway which is 55 kilometers long has a first-phase investment of VND20.63 trillion sourced from ODA loans and Vietnam’s reciprocal capital. The project was kicked off in 2009.
Despite being set for completion in 2012, the project will not be completed until next year, according to the latest report of VEC.
