Work started on the Da Nang - Quang Ngai expressway yesterday with funding worth US$1.4 billion in ODA from the Japan International Co-operation Agency, the World Bank and the Government to connect economic hubs in the central region.

The four-lane expressway will stretch for nearly 140km and accommodate speeds of up to 120kmh.

It is scheduled for completion in 2017, promoting socio-economic development in the central region in addition to ensuring smooth transportation during disaster relief response work.

The project will also promote the development of the Laos-Cambodia-Viet Nam economic triangle and the North-South economic corridor.

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony held yesterday in Quang Ngai, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc hailed the project, asking contractors, relevant agencies and authorities to work hard and make sure that it met its deadlines, especially in land clearance.

The expressway will also include a maintenance centre, a monitoring centre and a service centre.

Cao Khoa, chairman of the Quang Ngai People's Committee, said that 5,700 households had been relocated to 19 resettlement areas, making way for 266 hectares of land.

This will connect economic hubs such as Da Nang-Chu Lai (Quang Nam), Dung Quat (Quang Ngai) and Nhon Hoi (Binh Dinh).

Flood victims support

Also yesterday, deputy PM Phuc visited flood victims in Nghia Ky Commune, Tu Nghia District, Quang Ngai. Flooding earlier this month submerged 815 houses in the district and caused damage of up to VND10 billion ($476,000).

Visiting two households in the commune that were submerged under 2.5m of water, Phuc hoped that support from the local government would help residents to rebuild their lives.

He called on the commune to alter their production and lifestyles to cope with disaster situations in the future, and presented gifts to several households.

In related news, on Saturday, more than 1,500 workers from different districts and towns in the central province of Quang Ngai were assigned to three communes that suffered losses from the typhoon to help local residents.

Most roads and public constructions in the communes were submerged in mud.

This week, the Nghia Hanh People's Committee will dredge irrigation canals to prepare for the winter-spring rice crop.
