PIAGGIO OPENS $ 30 MILLION VESPA-PRODUCING FACTORY IN VIETNAM

HCMC – The first Vietnamese-made Vespa scooter was introduced on Wednesday at the opening ceremony of Vietnam Piaggio factory in Binh Xuyen Industrial Park in the northern province of Vinh Phuc.

This product is the first version of scooters that the Italian bike maker manufactures in Vietnam. The company will release its Vespa LX 150 in August.

To suit with Vietnamese customers, the saddle height of the Vespa LX made in Vietnam is made at 774mm, 11mm lower than the imported one of the same type.

The body is made entirely from steel. The welded steel body offers unmatchable rigidity and steering precision, according to the company’s statement.

Piaggio, the world’s fourth largest scooter and motorcycle manufacturer, started construction of its factory in northern Vietnam in October 2007. The company said it had spent US$30 million on the factory covering eight hectares in Binh Xuyen Industrial Park, with an initial annual output capacity of 50,000 units for local sale and export.

Production is planned to reach 100,000 units/year by 2012.
