THE NEED OF COLD SUPPLY CHAIN

Industry experts predict that the global supply chain market is forecast to reach $ 271.3 billion by 2022. Over the past 10 years, the size of the cold supply chain in Vietnam has increased fourfold.

According to foreign organizations, the development potential of refrigeration supply in Vietnam is ranked 17th globally. In 2007, the presence of two cold storage warehouses containing 40,000 tons of products of Hung Vuong Joint Stock Company marked the new development of the cold storage market in Vietnam. Recently, the biggest investment project is the cold storage with capacity of 50,000 tons of goods which was built in Hau river industrial zone, Hau Giang province. The project is in the construction phase with a total investment of $ 46.1 million.

Although the development of the cold supply market is highly appreciated, the cold supply is concentrated mainly in the southern area to serve export seafood. Food cold chain for domestic market in the system of restaurants and supermarkets in the country is still very limited.

“Due to the lack of thorough intervention by managers, preservative chemicals are still a barrier to the development of the cold supply chain", said by the representative of foreign agricultural enterprises. He added that food safety and hygiene requires enterprises to apply cold supply chain to ensure consumer health. In addition, the use of cold chain will prolong the shelf life of fruits and vegetables from 3 to 7 days when stored at home, as well as increase the time of display at the store, while reducing the loss of 60-70% .

Vietnam expects to have around 1,200 to 1,300 supermarkets, 180 shopping centers and 157 department stores by 2020. Choosing a low-cost, cold-supply supply chain partner will often be counterproductive. Besides damage, contamination in the process of transportation cause losses, products also shorten life directly affect the profitability of enterprises. This is one of the hidden costs that businesses have not calculated.
